Welcome to Under the Oaks! Many thanks for asking for an invite to Under the Oaks Sunday Social Folk Alliance house concerts. Our general location is in Appomattox, Virginia.  Here's our newsletter with our liability statement and a few guidelines for when attending a concert at the farm. Read it and agree to the terms; it’s nothing out of the usual. Make your seat donation for the artists by using the button on the website. We don’t take credit cards at the farm gate, but do accept cash or checks. All proceeds, after expenses, go to the performers.

Many thanks, and if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

 Ken and Bonnie

May through October, 4th Sundays, from 5 to 8 is our season.

If you’re new to the format of house concerts, welcome to our family of friends!  We hope your upcoming experience in private house concerts, the arts, and community through music is a magical and memorable one for you. To acquaint you with all that happens here at the farm, here’s a short list of things to do, bring and keep in mind before attending…

Statement of Liability

Here at the farm, we work very hard to bring everyone a safe place to enjoy, but being this is the great outdoors, accidents such as (but not limited to) falls, bug bites, standing too close to a fire, walking into, and stepping on things and such, may happen.

By entering the property, you agree to hold Under the Oaks at Evergreen Lavender Farm and it’s owners harmless and not liable for any injury sustained to you or any person under your care.

House Rules & Requests

This venue is a private home. Disrespectful behavior and/or over indulgence of alcohol will not be tolerated. We insist you have a designated driver for the evening if you plan to drink.

This is a Listening Venue. Be respectful of the "Listening Zone" and enjoy your conversations on the porches outside the listening zone or in the barn.

Due to our liability coverage, no children under the age of 12 are permitted. All children must be under adult supervision and remain in sight. Children must remain quiet within the Listening Zone.

The following are prohibited:

  • Fireworks
  • Dogs
  • Illegal Drugs
  • Bare Feet
  • Guns

Smoking within the out buildings is prohibited. Smoking is allowed outside and behind the Listening Zone. There are purple paint cans for butts & ashtrays scattered around the premises. Please be respectful of those ‘downwind’ and mindful of burning embers from cigarettes.

No entrance into the fields with the donkeys and other livestock, or anywhere else that is clearly blocked or marked for non-entrance.

In case of fire, there are fire extinguishers and water hoses located around the property. Please mind loose clothing around flames (sometimes we may have open fires for warmth and conversation).

We recommend bringing a small flashlight for the walk to the farm from the parking area.

For your convenience, Port-A-Johns are available with handicap accesibility.  The main house is off limits.

How House Concerts Work

Under the Oaks is a place where listening is the norm as you create a family of friends within a community of music at its roots. It’s a place for sharing a common interest in song. There are so many things in the world that tear us apart; music is something that brings us together.

We are not a business, but a private house concert venue on a private farm. We are located just outside of Appomattox, Virginia.  The stage sits under 200-year-old oak trees and the old farm house was built in 1935.  We are a member of the Folk Alliance. A reserved spot on the guest list is needed for all house concerts attendees.

The Folk Alliance guides us in these rules for "House Concerts" and that's where certain terms like "not open to the public", "seat donation", and "no walk-ins" are necessary for us to be compliant. When you go to the "SEAT DONATION" page and prepay OR when you contact us VIA EMAIL and we respond; Presto Chango! You are no longer just a member of the public, but will be an invited guest and thereafter a friend of "Under The Oaks Music". Occasionally, we can allow an unexpected guest at the entrance as in the case of a visiting friend or relative. Bear with us for these "Rules of Operation" while we figure out, during this first season how to grow, create community fellowship, and support musicians.

Dressing for weather is important in keeping yourself comfortable. We recommend the following:

  • Sensible, closed toed shoes
  • Extra layer of clothing or blanket (dependent upon the time of year.)
  • Chair
  • Cooler
  • Dish of your choosing for the community table

We welcome homemade dishes, or convenience snacks such as chips, cookies, or sweets. Serving utensils and other paper products are provided. We encourage recyling and ask that you please use the appropriate cans located on the farm for aluminum or plastic. Bring a dish to share with the Under The Oaks community!

Cost

Donations/attendance costs or "seat donations" are $10-$20 at this time. This will most likely change as we are able to attract touring artists with road expenses. Seat donations are collected at the gate, or through the reservation link for specified shows. Guest names are checked off upon entrance. The music is not for profit and a Folk Alliance House Concert event. All proceeds (minus expenses) go to the artists. Donations to the farm are welcomed and accepted in a tip jar on the stage. Tips are used to purchase musical equipment, building materials, paper products, candles, electricity, and any additional costs.

Last minute changes will be posted on our website and Facebook the day before the show.

Our capacity is limited and we urge you to contact Under the Oaks if you are unable to attend so the reserved space can be made available to other guests. Your commitment is vital to the success of Under the Oaks as well as the support of the artists. Please give us a 24 hour notice if you have prepaid and find that you cannot attend. This will be the only way that we can refund you for your ticket.
